Update on Virgo Transport 8 Ship: 130 Still Missing, 6 Dead
A joint SAR operation is still searching for 130 people out of the 243 passengers and crew of KM Virgo Transport 8 that went missing in the Java Sea on Sunday (13/9/2026). Head of the Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office, I Putu Sudayana, stated that so far 113 people have been evacuated, 107 survived, and 6 died.
A total of 280 personnel from Basarnas, the Indonesian Navy, KSOP, and various other units have been deployed. The ship was carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew on the Surabaya–Banjarmasin route.
At Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, families of the victims have started arriving, looking for answers. One of them is Fredy Manuhua from Mojokerto, who's searching for his younger brother Stevie (44), an organ player on the ship. The last time they talked was two days ago when the ship docked in Surabaya.
