United States Announces Permanent Opening of the Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump announced the permanent opening of the Strait of Hormuz via his personal social media account on Truth Social on Wednesday (April 14). Trump stated this move was taken for the global interest, specifically the stability of world energy distribution, and confirmed the US would no longer attempt any blockades. He mentioned China welcomed the policy, writing, 'China is very happy with this decision. We did it for them and for the whole world.'
Furthermore, Trump claimed there was a preliminary understanding with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where Beijing agreed not to send weapons to Iran. However, there has been no official confirmation from China or Iran regarding that claim. Trump also stated plans for an in-person meeting with Xi Jinping in the near future, emphasizing that a cooperative relationship with China is more beneficial than confrontation.
Although Washington has stated the Strait of Hormuz is open, conditions on the ground show the route remains under the influence of an Iranian blockade, particularly against vessels affiliated with the US, Israel, and their allies. This creates uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of the opening statement made by Trump. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic shipping lane connecting oil exports from the Gulf to the global market, where any disruption can impact energy prices and global economic stability.
