UIN Maliki Malang Develops Campus Pesantren, Molding Modern Ulama Generation
Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang is stepping up its role as a trailblazer in Islamic higher education by building a campus pesantren. Through a mandatory dorm program at Ma'had Al-Jamiah Sunan Ampel al-Ali (MSAA), all new students undergo a year-long coaching that balances intellectual, emotional, spiritual intelligence with tech-savviness.
The head of the Ma'had center, Dr. Ahmad Izzudin, explained that the concept of integrating pesantren and university has been piloted since 2000 to shape students' character in a supportive environment while preparing them for campus life and modern society. The curriculum focuses on four pillars: noble character, spiritual depth, broad knowledge, and professional maturity.
The program also builds digital skills through synergy with Lumbung Coin Eco-Resort, opening up practical training opportunities for students. The year-end performance called "Horizon" became a gratitude expression from mahasantri for the experience of learning religion and general sciences side by side.
This education model is expected to produce a generation of modern ulama with intellectual souls and intellectuals with ulama souls, echoing the scholarly tradition of Islam's golden age that merged religious knowledge, philosophy, and science.
