Timeline of Ex-Police Officer Sentenced to Life Dying in Isolation Cell at Palangka Raya Prison
Anton Kurniawan, a former Police Brigadier and life-sentence convict for a premeditated murder case, was found dead in the isolation cell of Class IIA Palangka Raya Prison on Saturday night (30/5/2026). The Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections for Central Kalimantan, I Putu Mardiana, stated that officers routinely checked the isolation cell every hour.
At 8:30 PM WIB, the victim was still in safe condition. Suspicion arose during the 11:35 PM check, when the victim didn't answer calls. After the door was opened, the victim was found in a prone position with his head facing the floor and body limp.
The prison coordinated with Bukit Batu Police and Palangka Raya Police, then the body was evacuated to Bhayangkara Hospital around 3:00 AM WIB. This death followed the victim's foiled escape attempt on 23 May 2026, which led to his placement in the isolation cell as a disciplinary sanction.
Preliminary autopsy results show no signs of fatal violence. The victim is suspected to have died from heart failure, but further lab tests are still being carried out by the medical team.
