The Story of Volcanic Eruption and the Destruction of the People of Sodom in Tafsir Perspective
The destruction of Prophet Lut's (AS) people serves as a stark warning in the Qur'an. They were wiped out for going way too far, committing acts like openly approaching the same sex, robbery, tyranny, and rejecting the monotheistic faith. The peak of it came when angels arrived as guests, and the people of Sodom actually plotted to do vile things to those guests.
According to the Qur'an, the punishment hit at dawn: their land was flipped upside down, accompanied by a thunderous roar, then pelted with stones of baked clay (sijjil). Some commentators, like Buya Hamka in Tafsir Al-Azhar, interpret this phenomenon as an analogy for a volcanic explosion, massive earthquake, and a rain of volcanic material.
Geologically speaking, there's an active fault zone around the Dead Sea, but no volcanoes were around during that period. Other scientific theories include an earthquake that triggered bursts of asphalt, gas, and sulfur, or even a meteor blast at the Tall el-Hammam site, which some think was where Sodom was located. The Dead Sea itself, barren and lifeless, is believed to be the remnant of that event.
This story pops up in various surahs as a moral lesson. Scientific interpretations are just attempts to understand natural phenomena, while in faith, it all happened by the will of Allah SWT.
