The Khuru Tamim Tower of the Tambakberas Islamic Boarding School Mosque in Jombang Gets a Makeover, Becoming an Icon of the 35th NU Congress
A historic mosque tower in the Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School complex in Tambakberas, Jombang, is getting a facelift ahead of the 35th Congress of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in late August 2026. This structure, dating back to before Indonesia’s independence, was chosen as the official icon because of its historical value and philosophy of unity. Standing 20 meters tall, the tower features carvings of four Arabic letters (خ ر ت م) that symbolize perfect independence (Khuru Tamim), made around 1914 by Kiai Hasbullah.
The chairman of the Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School Foundation, KH Abdurrozaq Sholeh (Gus Rozaq), said the renovation is just on the outside, with a fresh coat of mostly white paint with gold accents, without changing the structure. The committee is also wrapping up supporting facilities like leveling the parking lot and bazaar areas, and adding more toilets. All physical preparations are targeted to be done by the end of July before being reviewed by PBNU.
To keep things running smoothly, public vehicles won’t be allowed into the boarding school area; attendees will be dropped off on the main road and continue by electric vehicles (golf carts). Only vehicles belonging to the caretakers’ families and VIP guests can access the inner area. Gus Rozaq assured that the surrounding community’s daily activities will go on as usual, without any disadvantage.
The Jombang Regency government is lending a hand by speeding up road repairs, cleaning river channels, and replacing streetlights leading to the boarding school, all aimed to be finished by late July. Gus Rozaq expressed his appreciation for this support to make the congress a success.
