The Best Time to Pray and Seek Forgiveness: The Intention for Arafah Fasting and Its 11 Virtues
Arafah Day falls on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 / 9 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 H this year. It's one of the most special days in Islam. Muslims are encouraged to perform the sunnah fast of Arafah, especially those not performing Hajj. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "Fasting on the day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year" (HR Muslim). The intention for Arafah fasting is recited at night: "Nawaitu shauma ghadin 'an adâ'i sunnati Arafah lillâhi ta‘âlâ."
Among the virtues of Arafah Day are: the day when Islam was perfected (QS Al-Maidah: 3), a day glorified by Allah (QS Al-Buruj: 3), part of the sacred months (QS At-Taubah: 36), part of the Hajj month (QS Al-Baqarah: 197), and a day of forgiveness and deliverance from Hellfire (HR Muslim). It's also a time when prayers are answered, as the Prophet said: "The best supplication is the one made on the Day of Arafah."
Aside from fasting, Muslims are encouraged to increase dhikr, read the Qur'an, give charity, and make supplications. This moment is a huge opportunity to attain Allah's forgiveness and blessings. (*)
