Supreme Court Strikes Down Gibran's High School Certificate, Mahfud Leaves VP Continuation to Political Decision
The Supreme Court (MA) has officially declared the Certificate of Equivalency for Overseas High School Education belonging to Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka invalid and null and void by law. The cassation ruling with registration number 742 K/TUN/2026, filed by petitioner HM Subhan, was fully granted by the MA's panel of judges. The MA also ordered the certificate of equivalency held by the respondent to be withdrawn and destroyed.
Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has left the continuation of the vice president's term to a political decision in the DPR, as the dismissal of an already inaugurated vice president cannot be automatically carried out based on a Supreme Court ruling. He stressed the need for criminal proceedings against officials at the KPU and the Ministry of Education and Culture who issued and approved the document deemed legally flawed, since it's suspected of containing data falsification or abuse of authority.
Mahfud urged that the KPU and the Directorate General of Early Childhood and Secondary Education be investigated immediately regarding the issuance of the certificate and the alleged smuggling of article 18 paragraph (3).
