Singapore Threatens to Cut Indonesia's Internet, Meutya Hits Back Hard
A threat to sever Indonesia’s internet cables by former Singaporean parliament member Calvin Cheng Ern Lee has drawn sharp attention. Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Viada Hafid emphasized that if those cables were cut, 80 percent of Singapore’s connectivity capacity would also be at risk of collapsing. Most of the undersea cable routes landing in Singapore pass through Indonesian waters.
Meutya pointed out that the digital ties between the two countries are intertwined. With 267 million internet users, Indonesia is a huge digital market that attracts global tech investment. A serious connectivity disruption wouldn’t just affect internet access-it could hit the economy too.
She urged everyone not to make threats that harm both nations. Digital infrastructure needs to be protected together for the sake of national interests and global connectivity. Earlier, Calvin’s social media post questioning a cable cut sparked backlash from Indonesian netizens.

Now this is what you call smart diplomacy-no need for heated exchanges, but it gets the opponent thinking. Our digital economy is strong, so let’s not go around making threats like that.
