Santri, Cadres of Ulama Building Islamic Civilization
The 2026 National Santri Day carries the theme “Santri Strengthening the Nation Towards Golden Indonesia.” The Ministry of Religious Affairs encourages santri to contribute to development through mastery of science, technology, economic self-reliance, and social awareness. But a basic question pops up: are santri being prepared just to be professionals, or as future ulama who guide the community?
Based on Ministry data as of October 4, 2026, a total of 4,634,406 santri have been verified. This huge potential needs direction so it doesn’t lose sight of the main goal of Islamic education: producing knowledgeable generations who can guide the ummah and carry on the Islamic struggle. Modern skills are still important, but they gotta be part of shaping Islamic character and a clear vision of the struggle.
Ulama cadreship should be the strategic focus of pesantren education. Santri need to master Islamic knowledge, understand real-life situations, and be able to connect issues with sharia. This vision links santri education to the dream of building an Islamic civilization based on sound creed and proper life rules, not just fitting into the current system.
Santri Day is a moment to reevaluate where pesantren education is heading. Instead of just churning out individuals who are successful, pesantren are expected to become spaces for shaping the next generation who continue the ulama’s struggle-globally minded and responsible for the well-being of all humanity.
