Riots in France: Inequality, People’s Anger, and Lessons from Revelation
Riots have broken out in several French cities, including Paris, Limoges, and Lyon, sparked by anger over the cost of living, inequality, and crappy public services. About 1,200 people got arrested, a bunch of stores were looted, and public facilities were trashed. President Macron slammed the rioters, while protesters compared their actions to the 1789 Revolution.
The Quran (Surah At-Takathur: 1-3) criticizes civilizations that get trapped in luxury and neglect social responsibilities. Stark inequality builds walls between the hungry and those living in excess. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned, “What I fear most for my ummah is famine” (Narrated by Bukhari), making it clear that empty stomachs can topple order.
Islam teaches the fair distribution of sustenance as a trust, like how Umar bin Khattab and Umar bin Abdul Aziz led by lightening the people’s burden in hard times. Anger against injustice is legit, but looting and destruction break the principle of not harming yourself or others (Narrated by Ibn Majah and Ahmad).
A state that fails to provide for its people’s welfare and rioters who go astray both gotta be held accountable. Islam offers a middle path: a just state, responsible leaders, wealth that flows, and demanding rights without violence. The root issue isn’t fuel prices, it’s luxury standing way too close to hunger.
