Pray and Prepare: Super Typhoon Fung-wong Threatens the Philippines
Assalamu alaikum - Just a heads-up about a serious storm coming: the Philippines’ weather service is warning of life-threatening storm surges up to five meters and very destructive winds as Typhoon Fung-wong moves toward the eastern coast. It’s expected to strengthen into a super typhoon before it reaches land on Sunday night. The system’s huge circulation - about 1,500 km across - is already bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of eastern Philippines. Forecasters say it currently has sustained winds around 140 kph with gusts to 170 kph and could reach about 185 kph near landfall. That’s strong enough to destroy houses, uproot trees, and damage buildings. Eastern provinces, especially the Bicol region and areas of Samar, may get up to 200 mm of rain, increasing the risk of widespread flooding and landslides; northern and central Luzon could see 100–200 mm as it passes. Authorities are urging people in low-lying and coastal areas to move to higher ground and to stop all sea activities because of dangerous storm surges and violent winds. Several local governments have suspended classes for Monday and some flights have been canceled as a precaution. This comes just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi caused heavy destruction in the region, killing many people, displacing hundreds of thousands, and leaving large power outages. Neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand also suffered damage and flooding from Kalmaegi. Remember that our region is often vulnerable to powerful tropical storms, and scientists warn that warming seas are making these storms stronger.
