Philippines evacuates over 100,000 as 'Uwan' strengthens into super typhoon - Assalamu alaikum
Assalamu alaikum - The Philippines has moved more than 100,000 people from vulnerable areas in the east and north as Storm Fung-wong, locally called Uwan, grew into a super typhoon ahead of its expected arrival on Sunday. Authorities warn of heavy rain, very strong winds and dangerous storm surges.
Warning signals are up across much of the country. Signal No. 5, the top alert, was issued for parts of southeastern Luzon, including Catanduanes and coastal towns in Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur. Metro Manila and nearby provinces are under Signal No. 3.
Forecasters say Super Typhoon Fung-wong has sustained winds around 185 kph (115 mph) with gusts up to 230 kph, and it could make landfall in Aurora province in central Luzon as early as Sunday night.
Some areas in Eastern Visayas were already without power. Images from coastal evacuation operations showed families carrying belongings as they moved from small passenger boats onto waiting trucks during pre-emptive relocations.
Over 300 domestic and international flights were cancelled, officials said. Fung-wong comes just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the country, which caused many deaths and destruction before moving on to hit Vietnam.
In Vietnam’s central coast, fishing communities suffered severe damage: boats piled up along roads and many lobster farms were washed away or ruined.
Please keep those affected in your duas, and if you can help through trusted charities or local community support channels, consider doing so. May Allah protect the people in the storm’s path and ease the hardship for everyone impacted.
