PBNU and Morocco Strengthen Islamic Diplomacy, Discuss 2029 Strategic Plan
Relations between Indonesia and the Kingdom of Morocco are being continually strengthened through religious, educational, and cultural diplomacy. The Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), along with the Moroccan government, discussed strategic agendas, including reinforcing moderate Islam and the strategic partnership plan for both countries in 2029.
The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, Redouane Houssaini, met with PBNU Chairman KH Yahya Cholil Staquf in Jakarta on Wednesday (24/6/2026). PBNU Chairman KH Ulil Abshar Abdalla said that the meeting covered strengthening cooperation in cultural, religious, and educational fields. In education, there is an annual quota of scholarships from Morocco, including 20 special scholarships through NU.
The Moroccan Ambassador proposed a dialogue forum for scholars and intellectuals from both countries to strengthen the understanding of moderate Islam and exchange experiences in dealing with religious extremism. The forum is scheduled for next year in Indonesia.
The meeting underscored the commitment of both parties toward the 2029 strategic partnership. Previously, Chair of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives Utut Adianto also highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy to foster tangible cooperation, including the provision of 50 scholarships for Arabic language and historical studies, continuing the historical ties that have been established since the era of President Soekarno.
