NTB Governor Emphasizes Sport Tourism as a Driver of World-Class Economy and Tourism
West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal highlighted sport tourism as a key strategy to strengthen regional tourism and the economy. He said this while opening the Pocari Sweat Run Lombok 2026 in Mandalika, Central Lombok, on Saturday (12/7), which drew around 9,200 participants from various regions.
The governor noted that this event has a direct impact on hospitality, transportation, culinary sectors, SMEs, and the creative economy. He hopes the event will grow into a world-class marathon to attract international participants. The NTB provincial government is committed to increasing the number of sports events in Mandalika, including those leading up to the Mandalika MotoGP in October.
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia, Taufik Hidayat, expressed full support from the central government, emphasizing the multiplier effect of sports events on the regional economy. Pocari Sweat's Marketing Director revealed that 72 percent of participants came from outside Lombok, showing Mandalika's appeal.
ITDC also provided support by adding sports facilities, increasing accommodation occupancy, and holding the Mandalika Street Food Festival. The NTB provincial government is optimistic that sport tourism will become an economic growth engine through collaboration with various parties to make Mandalika a world-class sports destination.
