NTB Governor: Disaster Preparedness Key to Reducing Risk
The 2026 Disaster Preparedness Day commemoration in West Nusa Tenggara was centered at the Car Free Day area on Jalan Udayana, Mataram, on Sunday (4/26). This event, organized by the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of NTB, emphasized preparedness as the key to mitigating disaster impacts. NTB Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal stated that disasters cannot be prevented, but their risks can be reduced with good readiness.
The governor reminded that NTB is a disaster-prone region for events such as earthquakes, floods, droughts, and volcanic eruptions. Therefore, continuous efforts are needed to build a culture of alertness. The activity involved the government, agencies, communities, and students, supported by the NTB Disaster Risk Reduction Forum and the SIAP SIAGA Program. The event began with 'Resilient Gymnastics' as a symbol of collective readiness.
BPBD NTB introduced the SiAGA NTB Disaster Information System, a digital platform for quick information and early warnings. Community capacity was strengthened through outreach on Disaster-Resilient Villages and resilience studies on small islands in Lombok and Sumbawa. An inclusive approach highlighted the role of Disability Service Units to ensure vulnerable groups are not left behind. The commemoration was also enlivened by a literacy exhibition, blood donation, and free health services.
The governor concluded by affirming that Disaster Preparedness Day is not merely a ceremony, but a moment to strengthen collaboration and long-term commitment. 'Preparedness is a shared responsibility to build a resilient society,' he emphasized.
