New Twist in Hajj Quota Corruption: 24 DPR Working Committee Members Allegedly Asked for Allowances
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is still digging into the involvement of 24 members of the Working Committee (Panja) from the House of Representatives’ (DPR RI) Commission VIII in an alleged corruption case involving extra hajj quotas for 2023–2024. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said prosecutors are currently reviewing trial facts before deciding on any legal moves.
In testimony at the Jakarta Corruption Court, former Director of Umrah and Special Hajj at the Religious Affairs Ministry, Jaja Jaelani, confirmed there were requests for an additional allowance of 3,000 riyals (around Rp14.08 million) per person during an official trip to Saudi Arabia. The ministry had only prepared 1,500 riyals from members' honorariums.
The official trip was funded by the state budget through DPR RI's budget document. On top of that, there were indications that money was used to influence the 2024 Hajj Inquiry Special Committee, with state losses estimated to hit Rp622.09 billion based on an investigative calculation by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK).
