MUI to Push Global Palestine Diplomacy Through Al-Aqsa Forum in Late August
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) through its Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Division is set to hold an International Dialogue Forum on August 19–21, 2026, in Indonesia. The forum is in collaboration with the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), marking the 57th anniversary of the Al-Aqsa Mosque arson while also strengthening international diplomacy and solidarity for Palestine's independence. The head of MUI's HLNKI Division, Prof Sudarnoto Hakim, emphasized that the burning of Al-Aqsa was a pivotal moment that led to the formation of the OIC and serves as a reminder of the importance of the struggle to defend Palestine.
This agenda is framed within the perspective of the right to independence and the eradication of colonialism, in line with Indonesia's spirit of freedom. MUI asserts that independence is the right of all nations, and Palestine, which has yet to achieve independence, is a shared responsibility, including that of the Indonesian people. The forum not only commemorates history but also connects Indonesia's independence experience with the Palestinian people's struggle.
The issue of the Al-Aqsa Mosque is seen as inseparable from the broader Palestine question, touching on religious freedom and the protection of humanitarian values. MUI wants this forum to be a meeting space for religious, political, academic, and humanitarian perspectives, bringing together national figures, parliamentarians, academics, and international partners to broaden the support network.
Amid the humanitarian situation in Gaza, MUI is pushing for solidarity to be translated into concrete cooperation through diplomacy, inter-parliamentary relations, and engagement with international institutions. The forum is expected to strengthen cross-country collaboration and build a consolidation of global support for Palestine's independence, turning backing into diplomatic pressure and tangible actions.
