Ministry of Industry Strengthens Halal Industry, Certification Becomes Key to Competitiveness of Indonesian Products
The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) keeps boosting the national halal industry development strategy to position Indonesia as a global halal industry hub. Head of the Halal Industry Center at Kemenperin, Dewi Setiawati, at Airlangga Khair 2026 in Surabaya said that Indonesia has huge assets with 87 percent Muslim population and a global Islamic economy ecosystem ranked fourth. Muslim household consumption hits Rp 11,000 trillion, while halal product exports reach 74 billion US dollars.
Halal certification is applied to the whole Halal Product Process (PPH), covering production to sales, across sectors like food, textiles, pharma, and automotive. The government has issued the Halal Industry Development Roadmap 2025–2029 with six main strategies, including strengthening policies, facilitating certification, and international promotion. Kemenperin also optimizes technical implementation units as Halal Inspection Bodies and pushes incentives for Halal Industrial Zones.
Deputy for Partnership at BPJPH, Abdus Syakur, stressed that the halal certification obligation kicks in from October 2026 after several delays. So far, around 14 million products have been certified through over 4 million certificates. The certification application process can be done online and will be supported by a more efficient digital system. Kemenperin continues to collaborate with various parties to make sure industry players meet halal standards and compete in the global market.
