Minister Gus Irfan Admits Appointing His Kids as Expert Staff, Says They're Working Unpaid Voluntarily
Hajj and Umrah Minister Mochamad Irfan Yusuf (Gus Irfan) admitted his kid got appointed as an expert staff in the ministry he runs. He explained that his child and a bunch of his Islamic students had actually been working voluntarily without pay for three to four months, helping set up the institution back when it was still called the Hajj Organizing Agency (BP Haji).
According to Gus Irfan, when he was sworn in late October 2024, the agency didn't even have an organizational structure yet, no office, no support staff or anything. His close circle, including his kid and his students, chipped in on a voluntary basis. Some of them later got appointed as expert staff based on their skills that matched what was needed, while others just went back to their own stuff.
Gus Irfan added that he's actually entitled to appoint three special staff and five expert staff, but he's only used one special staff slot and four expert staff slots so far. He also let on that the Hajj and Umrah Ministry is still short on personnel - they need around 7,000 people but only have about 3,631 available. The ministry's opening up civil servant transfers from other agencies as a fix, instead of hiring new ones.
