Minangkabau Traditional Court Reports Abu Janda to West Sumatra Police over Alleged Hate Speech
The Minangkabau Traditional Council (MAAM) officially reported social media activist Permadi Arya, aka Abu Janda, to the West Sumatra Regional Police on Monday, June 1, 2026. The report was led by MAAM Chair Tengku Irwansyah Angku Datuak Katumanggungan, accompanied by legal counsel Mukti Ali, regarding Abu Janda's statement calling West Sumatra a "barbaric" province, which was seen as containing hate speech.
Initially, MAAM was waiting for progress on the report by the Minang Family Association's central board to the National Police Headquarters, but Abu Janda's clarification on TikTok and Instagram actually reinforced the statement without any goodwill. "We see no goodwill. If there was goodwill, after being reported he should have apologized," said Irwansyah. He stressed that the term "barbaric" is deeply hurtful because, according to the Indonesian dictionary (KBBI), it is synonymous with primitive and uncivilized societies, while Minangkabau has a strong customary system.
The traditional leaders agreed to bring this matter to the legal realm as a form of respect for Indonesian law. MAAM's legal counsel hopes for legal certainty so that there will be no more hate speech against the people of West Sumatra. As of now, the West Sumatra Police have not given an official statement regarding the follow-up to this report, which has become a public spotlight.
