Minangkabau Customary Court Reports Abu Janda to West Sumatra Police over Alleged Hate Speech
The Minangkabau Alam Customary Court (MAAM) has officially reported social media activist Permadi Arya, also known as Abu Janda, to the West Sumatra Regional Police on Monday, June 1, 2026. The report, led by MAAM Chairman Tengku Irwansyah Angku Datuak Katumanggungan alongside legal counsel Mukti Ali, concerns statements calling the province of West Sumatra "barbaric," which are deemed to contain hate speech.
Initially, MAAM was waiting for developments from the report filed by the Minang Family Association Central Board, but a clarification video posted by Abu Janda on social media actually seemed to reinforce his previous statements without any good faith. "We see no good faith. If there were good faith, after being reported he should have apologized," said Irwansyah. He emphasized that the term "barbaric" deeply hurts the Minangkabau people who have a strong customary system.
A customary deliberation agreed on legal action as a form of respect for the prevailing laws. MAAM's legal counsel stressed that this report aims to obtain legal certainty so that there will be no more hate speech against the people of West Sumatra. This case has drawn public attention and condemnation from various parties, while the West Sumatra Police have yet to issue an official statement.
