Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Sends Solidarity to Indonesia Over Anak Krakatau Eruption and Forest Fires
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reached out to Indonesia's 7th President Joko Widodo on Sunday morning (6/9/2026) to apologize for not being able to meet in person while Jokowi was in Penang, Malaysia. On top of that, Anwar expressed Malaysia's solidarity with the Indonesian people affected by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau and the forest and land fires disaster.
Through a post on his official Instagram account, Anwar wrote, “I conveyed solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Indonesia after the volcano disaster and the challenges posed by the haze problem.” He stressed that the relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia goes beyond just being neighbors-they're kindred nations with strong historical, cultural, and fraternal ties.
Jokowi thanked Anwar for his concern and prayers, showing appreciation for the solidarity from the Malaysian government and people. This exchange shows the good personal rapport between the two leaders and highlights the importance of working together to tackle cross-border environmental issues like haze, given how close the two countries are geographically.
