Malaysia's Attorney General Delays Najib Razak's House Arrest Even Though He Paid Rp222 Billion in Bail
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is still locked up in prison even though he paid a bail of 50 million ringgit, or around Rp222 billion. The conditional release to house arrest that was supposed to happen on Friday (6/11/2026) based on a High Court order got delayed by the Attorney General's Office until some undefined time.
Najib's lawyers protested the delay, saying all the conditions for a pardon from the Malaysian King had been met. Meanwhile, the Attorney General's Office is questioning how the royal pardon and the court order apply to the 1MDB corruption case. They say this situation involves "complex legal questions" that haven't come up before.
The core issue is whether paying the fine just lets Najib serve the rest of his sentence for the SRC International case under house arrest or if it actually ends his time behind bars altogether. That matters because another sentence in the 1MDB case is supposed to kick in after the SRC verdict wraps up.
The Attorney General stressed this decision isn't meant to go against the king's order, but rather to make sure the royal pardon and court orders are carried out properly according to the law. For now, Najib's detention status stays the same until further instructions come from the relevant authorities.

Where'd all that money even come from, man... This whole 1MDB case really screwed over so many people. Good on the prosecutors for not just handing out an easy way out-gotta serve as a lesson for other officials.
