KPK Responds to Gus Alex's Camp Request for Judge to Summon Jokowi in Hajj Quota Corruption Trial
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) hasn't confirmed yet whether the 7th President Joko Widodo will appear as a witness in the trial over alleged corruption in the additional 2023-2024 hajj quotas. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said they're just waiting to see how the trial unfolds and how the panel of judges assesses the witness testimony and evidence presented by the public prosecutors.
The legal counsel for the defendant Ishfah Abidal Azis, aka Gus Alex, the former special staffer to the Minister of Religious Affairs, earlier asked the judges to summon Jokowi because they reckon he was directly involved in securing the extra hajj quota from the Saudi Arabian government. Jokowi's testimony is needed to explain the subject of the case concerning the additional 20,000 quota spots for pilgrims.
This case covers a long process from how the extra quota came about to the alleged flow of funds to individuals in the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Four defendants are involved, including former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, with state losses estimated at around Rp622.09 billion.
