Jokowi Hasn't Reaffirmed Support for Gibran to Run Alongside Prabowo in 2029 Election
Indonesia's 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) hasn't yet doubled down on his support for the Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka pairing for the 2029 presidential election. When asked about the possibility of his son once again being Prabowo's running mate, Jokowi instead pointed out that the political contest is still a long way off. "Well, the election's still far away," Jokowi said, as quoted on Friday (10/9/2026).
That statement is a shift from Jokowi's previous stance, where he openly pushed for Prabowo and Gibran to continue their leadership for two terms. This time, he chose to stress that there's still plenty of time before the next presidential election rolls around. Jokowi also urged Gibran to prioritize his duties as vice president rather than getting too deep into talks about future political contests.
The attitude caught attention because Jokowi had previously expressed explicit support for the Prabowo-Gibran ticket for two terms, including on February 5, 2026, and September 2025. Now, he didn't give a similar affirmation and instead chose to remind that government work should be the main focus.
Questions about the future of the Prabowo-Gibran duo popped up alongside renewed scrutiny of Gibran's educational documents, which became a talking point again after a Constitutional Court ruling about the unavailability of high school diploma evidence. Jokowi responded by saying that every country has a different education system.
