Jokowi Brings Up Roy Suryo's Ethics: Researchers Don't Act Like This, Showing Up at UGM with an Entourage
Indonesia's 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) took a swipe at Roy Suryo's ethics, who claims to be a researcher looking into his diploma. Jokowi reckons Roy Suryo's behavior doesn't reflect how a real researcher should act. He said this while testifying in a defamation trial at the East Jakarta District Court on Thursday (Nov 5, 2026).
Jokowi pointed out that a proper researcher shouldn't show up at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) with a whole group in tow. But the panel of judges asked Jokowi to stick to answering the prosecutor's questions according to the case at hand.
Roy Suryo is being charged with slander over claims that Jokowi's diploma was fake. The charges stem from a social media post back in March 2025 accusing Jokowi's bachelor's degree of being inauthentic. Roy used something called Error Level Analysis without checking it out or getting Jokowi's permission.
