Jokowi Baffled by Fake Diploma Accusations: They Haven't Even Seen the Original

Indonesia's 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) questioned the fake diploma allegations leveled against him. He thinks the accusation doesn't make sense since it came from people who haven't even seen the original diploma. "Haven't seen the real diploma but already calling it fake, what kind of logic is that," Jokowi said during a trial at the East Jakarta District Court, Thursday, November 5, 2026. During the trial, Jokowi showed his original diploma from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) along with other educational documents from elementary to high school. He also explained the process of writing his thesis at UGM's Faculty of Forestry, including submitting his title proposal up to three times to his supervisor Prof. Dr. Ir. Achmad Soemitro. Jokowi stressed that the document circulating and being called his thesis approval page wasn't right, because it didn't include his identity and showed someone else's face. He also clarified that his academic work was a skripsi (undergraduate thesis), not a master's thesis, and mentioned that back in 1985 thousands of theses were printed in Times New Roman font. This trial is related to the case of defendant Roy Suryo, who is charged with defamation and electronic information violations regarding the fake diploma accusations. The prosecutor accused Roy of intentionally manipulating and damaging electronic documents. Jokowi is said to have suffered immaterial losses due to his tarnished reputation.
