Jokowi Asked to Testify in Hajj Quota Corruption Trial
The legal defense team for Ishfah Abidal Azis (Gus Alex), a defendant in the alleged 2023-2024 extra hajj quota corruption case, has asked the court to summon former President Joko Widodo as a witness. The request came after hearing testimony from former Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo.
Gus Alex's lawyer, Wa Ode Nur Zainab, believes Dito doesn't really know the exact number of additional quotas granted by Saudi Arabia. She pointed out that Jokowi was the one who attended the meeting with Saudi leaders in October 2023, so he'd understand the quota allocation best.
Dito himself explained that specific talks about hajj only happened during lunch after the main agenda. He admitted he didn't know the extra quota numbers, since the technical discussions took place in follow-up meetings he didn't join.
In this case, four defendants are being tried, including former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas. State losses from the case are suspected to be around 622 billion rupiah.
