Jimly Proposes Dropping Degree Requirement for Presidential and VP Candidates, but Makes It Mandatory for Legislators
Former Constitutional Court Justice Jimly Asshiddiqie suggested scrapping the education certificate requirement for presidential and vice presidential candidates in the law. He said this in response to the fuss over the validity of VP Gibran Rakabuming Raka's diploma at the MK, Jakarta, Wednesday (7/10/2026).
Jimly thinks Indonesia's democratic climate is still shallow cause the nation's energy gets drained on administrative debates about degrees. He believes the people's sovereignty should decide a leader's worthiness, as long as the candidates' educational backgrounds are transparently announced.
On the flip side, Jimly pushed for stricter education rules for legislative candidates, requiring at least a bachelor's degree (S1). He sees this as crucial to improve the quality of representation and raise the bar for public education standards among lawmakers in parliament.
