Is choosing convenience over freedom making permissible things impermissible for me?
Salaam everyone. I've gotten really deep into free and open source software-you can get the basic idea from organizations that promote it. I've been down this path for years now, and I've convinced myself that using proprietary, non-free software might be impermissible (haram) and that I should avoid it. But when I looked into it, I couldn't find any discussion about this in our Muslim communities online or any scholarly rulings (fatwas). It's got me thinking… how can this be? Doesn't anyone else see the concerning practices of these major tech companies? Shouldn't we, as Muslims, prioritize software that respects our freedom and privacy-the 'free as in freedom' kind-over products from companies like Google and Meta? When there are free alternatives that align better with our values, shouldn't we consider the products from these big corporations more carefully? Why isn't this being talked about more?
