Iran Sends Official Response to US Proposal, Trump Rejects It
Iran has delivered its official response to a US proposal to end the conflict in the Middle East. The response was conveyed via Pakistan as mediator on Monday, May 11, 2026, and covers discussions on ending hostilities, maritime security in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear program, and the lifting of economic sanctions. Iranian officials describe the response as 'realistic and positive'.
US President Donald Trump immediately rejected it in a Truth Social post, calling it 'absolutely unacceptable.' The earlier US proposal had asked Iran to stop developing nuclear weapons and uranium enrichment for at least 12 years, in return for a phased lifting of sanctions and the release of frozen assets.
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have continued to rise over the past week, even though a truce since April 8 hasn’t been declared over. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf emphasized that full peace can only be achieved if the US maritime blockade ends. In response, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz to foreign vessels.
