Iran Prepares Grand Funeral for Ayatollah Khamenei After War Delay
Iran's government has started getting ready for a huge funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died in a US and Israeli military strike on February 28, 2026. This state ceremony got delayed for almost three months because the war situation just didn’t allow it.
A special committee has been set up to coordinate the preparations, working with state agencies, community organizations, and religious institutions. Mohsen Mahmoudi, the head of Iran's Coordinating Council, said various parties are handling the technical and logistical needs so the ceremony can be held as soon as an official schedule is set.
The government expects a massive turnout, given Khamenei’s role as the top leader since 1989 and his influence over more than three decades. Special security arrangements are being drawn up, including for foreign delegations that are expected to attend.
So far, no official funeral date has been announced. But the ongoing prep work suggests this ceremony will be one of the biggest processions in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran, marking the end of a long era in the country's political journey.
