Hajj Spending Reaches IDR 29 Trillion, BPS Reveals 70 Percent Flows to Saudi
The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that total spending by Indonesian Hajj pilgrims reached IDR 29.25 trillion during the 1447 H/2026 M Hajj season. About 70 percent, or IDR 20.48 trillion, was used for goods and services consumption in Saudi Arabia, while only 30 percent, or IDR 8.78 trillion, was domestic consumption.
BPS Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said the domestic consumption portion can still be increased so that Hajj not only provides religious benefits but also stronger economic impact for Indonesia. That domestic spending includes goods and services produced in Indonesia or using Indonesian raw materials, including cooking spices used in pilgrim catering kitchens in Saudi Arabia.
Total spending comes from regular BPIH (IDR 17.77 trillion), special BPIH (IDR 7.23 trillion), and pilgrims' personal expenditures (IDR 4.25 trillion). BPS considers the supply chain key to enlarging Hajj economic contribution, for instance by increasing Indonesian products and services in Hajj implementation.
By boosting the domestic consumption share, the contribution to GDP and household spending can increase. BPS urges that this large Hajj spending not just be travel costs, but also drive demand for Indonesian products.
