Grieving the loss of my beloved cat
Assalamu alaikum. Yesterday, my cat was hit by a car and passed away in a hit-and-run. I saw his little body lying there, hurt and covered in blood, and I can't get that image out of my mind. A neighbor told us that after he was hit, he ran to their door searching for help. The thought of him being scared, in pain, and needing me while I had no clue is tearing me apart. He would have been six next month. He wasn't "just a cat"-he was my baby, my comfort, and one of the biggest joys in my life. He was there through my teenage depression and every heartbreak I went through. So smart, loving, and he always knew when I was sad-he'd lick my tears away. My sister and I talked about him all the time, and I'd spend my days just waiting to get home to see him. My mom, sister, and I feel like we've lost a child or a sibling. I just can't wrap my heart around that the sweet, chatty, loving boy I knew was the same one I saw on the ground. My mind keeps going over what he must've felt. I keep wishing I'd looked for him earlier, found him, saved him, held him tight and told him he wasn't alone. I know, logically, I didn't know he needed me, but my heart is screaming that I failed my baby. I want that awful image to leave my mind, but then I feel guilty for wanting that. It's like if the image fades, I'm forgetting his pain or being unfair to him. But remembering it is breaking me. I can't stop crying, I feel sick with grief, and I don't know how to go back to normal life without him. I keep asking Allah to take extra special care of him. I know Allah is always with me and will never get tired of hearing my grief, but I'm really struggling to accept this loss. Please make dua for my baby boy and for my family. I really need Islamic comfort and practical advice from anyone who's been through traumatic grief or lost someone dear. How do I deal with the guilt, those intrusive images, and this unbearable longing? How do I let myself heal without feeling like I'm forgetting or leaving him behind?
