Gaza children slowly return to school after two years of war - Alhamdulillah
Assalamu alaikum - NUSEIRAT: The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said this week that after the ceasefire in Gaza some schools are reopening, and children are slowly going back to classes. UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini noted that more than 25,000 pupils have already joined temporary learning spaces, while around 300,000 will take classes online.
At Al-Hassaina school in western Nuseirat, central Gaza, lessons have resumed even though there aren’t enough classrooms. Warda Radwan, an 11-year-old in sixth grade, said she’s eager to get back to learning. “I lost two years of school because of displacement and the war,” she said.
During the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas, Al-Hassaina and many other UNRWA buildings served as shelters for displaced families. You can still see their presence in laundry lines hanging across the school’s three floors. Warda said classes are restarting slowly as families move out so students can return to their rooms. Then she and her classmates “can continue learning like before.”
On Saturday in the school courtyard, young girls stood for morning assembly, doing stretching exercises with their teachers and chanting “Long live Palestine!” About 50 girls were packed into one classroom, sitting on the floor without desks or chairs. They answered the teacher’s questions with enthusiasm and copied lessons from the blackboard into their notebooks, grateful to be back after two years.
Another classroom held a similar number of older girls, also seated on the floor with notebooks on their laps. Relatives watching were thankful to see the return of education. “Since Oct. 7, there hasn’t been school for our children,” said Jenin Abu Jarad, a relative of a student. “All they could do was fetch water, get food, or play in the streets. But thankfully, about a week to ten days ago, schools began reopening gradually.”
May Allah make it easy for these children and bless their learning.
