France in Turmoil: Economic System Deemed a Failure, Immigrants Scapegoated
French President Emmanuel Macron has slammed remarks from foreign leaders linking the unrest in France to Muslim immigrants and extremism. He called the accusations off-base and warned about information manipulation, including the spread of AI-generated images, to build an invasion narrative. Macron stressed that this crisis isn't caused by immigrants but is a structural issue.
A wave of protests involving hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, and union workers was sparked by frustration over crumbling education infrastructure, falling PISA scores, and a planned 1.2 billion euro budget cut. Two incidents of police violence-a teenager losing a hand from a stun grenade and another student losing teeth from a tear gas canister-made things worse.
The protests have spread to Italy, Belgium, Spain, and other European countries. Economic pressures like 3.8% inflation, a housing crisis, and high debt show an economic model that's failing to serve the majority. The government admits the students' demands are legit, but accuses opposition parties of exploiting the riots for political gain.
