France and Canada Follow UK in Boycotting Products from Israeli Settlements in the West Bank
France and Canada have announced they'll follow the UK's move to ban imports of goods from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The announcement was made by UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in parliament, saying the three countries are taking action against the ongoing expansion of settlements.
The ban is backed by several other European countries like the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, Norway, and the Nordic states, who are committed to supporting further measures. This step also includes sanctions against companies and individuals providing construction, infrastructure, financing, or real estate services for settlement expansion.
Miliband stated that Britain's decision was based on Israel's announcement of tenders to build 1,200 homes in the E1 area, which was seen as crossing a "long-standing red line." He also mentioned that the UK government agrees there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the West Bank by settlers.
Israel responded by accusing Britain of spreading lies, shutting down the British consulate in East Jerusalem, expelling British representatives from the joint military center in Gaza, and banning entry to a number of British officials and citizens. Meanwhile, the leaders of Canada, Britain, and France reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution for peace in the Middle East.
