First Mosque Initiated by Indonesians in Western Canada Officially Established
Al-Ikhlas Centre Mosque, the first mosque initiated by the Indonesian community in Western Canada, officially opened in Edmonton, Alberta, Saturday (8/1/2026). This mosque was built on the initiative of the Indonesian Muslim Community in Edmonton (IMCE) through a waqf movement spearheaded by Cinta Quran Foundation, with support from over 200,000 donors from Indonesia and other countries. The funds collected reached CAD1,140,446.09 or around Rp14.6 billion.
The inauguration was attended by Indonesian Consul General in Vancouver Nina Kurnia Widhi, Cinta Quran Foundation Advisory Board Ustaz Fatih Karim, IMCE board members, and public figures Nikita Willy and Indra Priawan. The Indonesian Consul General sees this mosque as holding strategic meaning as a bridge of friendship between Indonesia and Canada through the values of peace, tolerance, and humanity. This mosque is the third mosque established by Cinta Quran Foundation abroad after Japan and Australia.
Al-Ikhlas Centre Mosque is projected to grow into the first Indonesian Islamic Centre in Western Canada, with a capacity of around 100 worshippers. Besides being a place of worship, the mosque will serve as a center for Quran learning, family guidance, youth development, social services, community empowerment, and even a space for cross-cultural dialogue. Cinta Quran Foundation has also prepared further development by acquiring the property next to the mosque for a larger Islamic Centre area.
