Eid Prayer at Nurul Azhar Mosque Becomes a Gathering Moment for Lapindo Mud Survivors
SIDOARJO – Hundreds of former Lapindo mud victims performed Eid prayers in the yard of Nurul Azhar Mosque, Wednesday (27/5), while also catching up with each other. The mosque, located right in front of the mud eruption center, once again became a meeting point for residents now scattered across different areas.
Nurul Azhar Foundation’s chairman, Muhammad Masruk, said this tradition is deliberately maintained so that ex-Lapindo folks have a reunion space. “They’re used to praying here, and it’s become a chance to meet up,” he said.
Besides the Eid prayer, the foundation also distributes sacrificial animals to affected residents, both those still living in Porong and those who have moved away. The Lapindo mud disaster, which began on May 29, 2006, has buried 16 villages and drastically redrawn the area’s map.
Nurul Azhar Mosque still stands firm as a witness to the residents’ struggle and a binder of memories, even though their hometown has turned into a sea of mud.
