Controversy Over the Appointment of the Hajj Minister's Sons as Expert Staff, Gus Irfan Gives an Explanation
BANDA ACEH - The appointment of two sons of Hajj and Umrah Minister Mochamad Irfan Yusuf (Gus Irfan) as expert staff has drawn criticism. Political analyst Saiful Mujani voiced concerns on social media about potential nepotism, questioning the professionalism and transparency of the selection.
The names Barbarossa Muhammad Farros and Gibran Muhammad Fawwaz appear in the attachment to Minister of Hajj and Umrah Decree Number 3 of 2026. Even though nepotism allegations have surfaced, clarity about the selection process and their competence is key to addressing public criticism.
Gus Irfan explained that his sons got involved during the early formation of the Hajj Organizing Agency at the end of 2024, when the agency still didn’t have an office or staff. He said they helped out voluntarily, alongside some santri, without pay for three or four months during the transition period.
