A leftover World War II bomb explosion happened at the Fisheries Complex on Jalan Walter Mongonsidi, Vandoi Village, Biak Kota District, Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, on Sunday (May 31, 2026) at 2:45 PM local time. Five people died, three are missing, and dozens of houses got damaged. Biak Numfor Police Chief AKBP Ari Trestiawan said based on residents' accounts, the blast was likely triggered by locals trying to saw or dismantle the bomb to get explosives for fish bombs. The police are still looking into the exact cause. A joint team from Biak Numfor Police, the Mobile Brigade, and SAR have been securing the area, processing the scene, and searching for the three missing victims.
