Catholic Youth Report JK's Sermon to Metro Jaya Regional Police Regarding Martyrdom Concept
The Central Board of Catholic Youth, through its Chairman Stefanus Gusma, expressed objection to the statements of Indonesia's 10th and 12th Vice President, Jusuf Kalla (JK), concerning religious views in conflict contexts and the concept of martyrdom. Gusma considered the statements theologically incorrect and potentially causing public misunderstanding. He emphasized that in Christian teaching, there is no concept of martyrdom through killing, but rather it stresses love, sacrifice, and willingness to suffer without retaliation, referencing the Gospel of Matthew 5:44.
Gusma also stressed that as a national figure, public statements should be delivered carefully, considering the socio-political impact on Indonesia's diverse society. He warned that erroneous and generalized narratives about religious teachings risk damaging unity and tolerance, and could potentially instigate division.
As a concrete step, Catholic Youth reported the content of JK's sermon video to Metro Jaya Regional Police with registration number LP/B/2546/IV/2026/SPKT/POLDAME
