Behind the Peak of Hajj 2026: Safari Wukuf Declines, Badal Hajj and Continued Strengthening of Health Services
On Dhul-Hijjah 9, 1447 AH (May 26), millions of pilgrims performed wukuf at Arafah and spent the night at Muzdalifah and Mina. PPIH Saudi Arabia prepared safari wukuf services for seriously ill, elderly, and disabled pilgrims, with 267 pilgrims and 150 officers participating. Safari wukuf pilgrims were dispatched to Arafah at 1:00 PM Saudi time, and after wukuf, they were taken to Makkah Transit Hotel for recovery.
To strengthen health services, PPIH set up the Indonesian Hajj Health Clinic (KKHI) in Arafah and Mina, along with 657 Arafah Task Force officers. Transportation, accommodation, catering, religious guidance, and pilgrim protection services were also reinforced. Ministry of Hajj spokesperson Maria Assegaf urged pilgrims to care for each other and report any pilgrims who seem confused or separated.
The government prepared badal hajj for pilgrims who passed away or were unable to attend wukuf due to health reasons. As of May 23, 79 pilgrims were in the badal scheme (75 died in Madinah and Makkah, 4 at embarkation points), and 135 hospitalized pilgrims might not be able to perform wukuf. The number of safari wukuf participants this year dropped significantly compared to 477 last year and 482 in 1445 AH.
