Asyura Fasting 2026: Virtues, History, and Complete Schedule
The Falakiyah Institute of PBNU has set the start of Muharram 1448 H on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. So, Tasu'a fasting (9th Muharram) falls on Thursday, June 25, 2026, and Asyura fasting (10th Muharram) on Friday, June 26, 2026. Muharram is one of the sacred months with great virtues.
Asyura fasting has an important history. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina, he found the Jews fasting on that day as gratitude for the safety of Prophet Moses. The Prophet said, "We have more right to Moses than you," and then commanded the Asyura fast. To distinguish from the Jews, it's also recommended to fast on Tasu'a and the eleventh day, with three levels: fasting only on Asyura, Asyura and Tasu'a, or all three.
The ruling for Asyura fasting is sunnah muakkad after Ramadan fasting became obligatory. Its virtue, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The most excellent fast after Ramadan is in the month of Allah, Muharram" (HR Muslim). Asyura fasting can erase minor sins of the past year (HR Muslim). The difference with Arafah fasting is that Arafah fasting is specifically for the ummah of Prophet Muhammad, so it's more special.
The day of Asyura also marks many important events, like the acceptance of Prophet Adam's repentance, the safety of Prophet Noah, and the deliverance of Prophet Moses from Pharaoh. It's recommended to increase dhikr and istighfar, like reciting 'Hasbunallah wa ni'mal wakil' 70 times. May we attain the blessings of Asyura day.
