Assalamualaikum - Saudi initiative trains students in restoring historic mosques
Assalamualaikum - The Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques, together with the Heritage Commission and the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts, has given 15 Saudi students hands-on experience restoring several historic mosques.
These students are taking part in a six-month field training program where, under the supervision of specialized Saudi engineers, they learn traditional mud-brick construction and woodworking techniques.
Another group of 15 students will join soon, and training will continue into early 2026, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The program has two main tracks. One track focuses on traditional construction, offering practical modules in mud-brick building at historic mosques restored with authentic materials and expert oversight. The other track teaches the craft of traditional Najdi doors, with training in carpentry, carving, and production to help preserve this old art.
So far, the project restored 30 mosques in 10 regions in its first phase and 30 more in 13 regions in its second phase. Its goals are to revive authentic architectural styles of historic mosques, raise awareness of their cultural and religious value, and harmonize traditional techniques with modern construction standards for long-term sustainability.
The initiative aims to prepare these mosques for worship, restore their architectural authenticity, highlight the Kingdom’s cultural heritage, and strengthen its religious and cultural standing - all aligned with Vision 2030’s emphasis on preserving national heritage and promoting cultural legacy.
