Assalamu Alaikum - Civilians in Al Fasher Facing Horrors, UN Warns
Assalamu Alaikum. The UN Human Rights Office says Al Fasher has turned into a city full of grief as violent RSF attacks have intensified, leaving civilians trapped and suffering atrocities on an unimaginable scale.
Li Fung, the UN Human Rights Representative in Sudan, said in a video that over the past ten days the attacks have escalated and Al Fasher has become a city of mourning. People who survived 18 months of siege and fighting are now facing horrors that are hard to describe.
Hundreds have been killed, including women, children, and wounded people who sought shelter in hospitals and schools. Whole families were cut down while trying to flee, and others have simply disappeared. Thousands have reportedly been detained, including medical staff and journalists.
The UN representative also warned that sexual violence is a grim reality, and that there are no truly safe routes out of Al Fasher. Those still trapped - the elderly, people with disabilities, those with chronic illnesses, and the wounded - face serious protection risks.
This is not random chaos, she said, but a deliberate assault on human life and dignity, often driven by ethnic motives. The UN Human Rights Office is continuing to document violations and abuses despite disrupted communications and limited access to key sites. They say they will keep speaking for survivors and pushing for accountability.
The UN and humanitarian groups are trying to secure safe passage, protection for civilians, and unhindered humanitarian access to help the many affected people. Al Fasher is bleeding, the representative said, and urgent action is needed: stop the violence, protect civilians, give victims assistance and avenues for justice so these horrors do not happen again.
The RSF reportedly took control of Al Fasher on October 26 and carried out massacres, according to local and international groups, raising fears the assault could deepen the country’s divisions. Since April 15, 2023, fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF has killed thousands and displaced millions, despite regional and international mediation efforts.
