Aceh Flood Photo Story by Chaideer Mahyuddin Wins Silver at Asian Media Awards 2026
A photo story by AFP photographer Chaideer Mahyuddin, documenting the flash floods in Aceh in late 2025, snagged Silver in the Best in Climate Photography category at the Asian Media Awards 2026 in Singapore on Monday (26/10). The piece highlights how the disaster affected the lives of flood survivors in Aceh.
The disaster claimed over a thousand lives and brought attention to environmental damage and deforestation, and how those things raise the risk of ecological disasters. AFP also took home the Best Lifestyle Photography award at the same event.
Chaideer said this award is recognition for documenting disaster impacts and environmental destruction in Sumatra. His earlier work, "The Last Hope", won first place in the Nature and Environment category at APFI 2026. He hopes issues like forest loss from mining and deforestation get more attention so people become more aware about protecting ecosystems.
