A Way to Break Free from Sins, Insha’Allah
Assalamu alaikum! I was looking into how our brain deals with urges and habits, and I stumbled on something that might help if you’re trying to leave a sin behind. You know how sometimes you notice patterns, right? Like maybe you feel down because of a tough family situation, loneliness, sadness, or just feeling like nothing works out even when you try hard. Those feelings can be triggers. When a trigger hits-say you feel really lonely-your brain might link that to a certain sin as a way to escape. Then it becomes a loop. The more you repeat it, the stronger that loop gets. After the trigger and the urge come, there’s usually a moment where you start bargaining with yourself. You might think, “Just this once,” or “I’ll repent later,” even though you know it’s wrong. Then if you slip, you feel regretful and sad, which can make it even harder to stop, and the cycle just keeps going. Sometimes the trigger is something simple, like just scrolling through your phone and seeing something inappropriate that sparks an urge. Then the same pattern starts. So how do you break this? First, it helps to just recognize how it works-like we just did. Second, try to deal with the trigger itself. If it’s loneliness, maybe work on making new, righteous friends. If it’s a bad environment, do what you can to change it. When the trigger shows up, just notice it and don’t let it control you. If something like social media keeps bringing up urges, maybe delete it for good-it’s easier than fighting the urge every time. When the urge comes, remind yourself why it feels so hard-it’s probably tied to your situation, not just the sin itself. Then when the bargaining thoughts start, recognize them and win that inner debate. You already know the truth in your heart. And if you do mess up, make sincere tawbah and truly believe that Allah is the Most Forgiving. Don’t let shaytan drag you into more sins by telling yourself, “I already slipped, so I might as well keep going.” Just get back up. You might fail sometimes, especially in the beginning, but don’t give up. The fact that you’re trying and repenting is already a sign of progress, insha’Allah. Just try to understand what’s happening in your mind and body like I explained, so you don’t keep falling into sin without thinking. May Allah make it easy for all of us.
