8th Indonesian Muslim Congress: Minister Offers Free Seeds and Land Cultivation for Islamic Boarding Schools
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman invited Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to step up their role in national food security. The Ministry of Agriculture has prepared free seeds for plantation commodities, free land cultivation, and farming assistance for pesantren that have productive land.
Amran said this when he attended the 8th Indonesian Muslim Congress held by the Indonesian Ulema Council in Jakarta on Sunday (26/7). Pesantren can apply for the aid through local agriculture offices. "If there are pesantren in need, we have sugarcane, cocoa, coconut, cashew, coffee seeds-all free. The land processing is also free," he said.
This program is part of the development of 870,000 hectares of strategic plantation commodities with a budget of around Rp9.95 trillion. Amran thinks the involvement of pesantren can create food self-sufficiency and productive economic activities for students and the community. He also explained the downstreaming strategy for commodities to boost agriculture's added value.
Additionally, Amran mentioned the expansion of agricultural programs in Papua, with new rice fields and land optimization now being extended to several provinces. Public enthusiasm is high, including requests for more land from tribal chiefs. This collaboration is expected to strengthen the people's economy and promote equal welfare.
